Now some will argue that the data above is not accurate. But the data is provided as of this date from Google App store itself. For search revealed that for international apps such as the following, that their numbers reflect their international brand recognition.
Google Installs 500,000,000 – 1,000,000,000
Facebook Installs 500,000,000 – 1,000,000,000
WhatsApp Messenger Installs 500,000,000 – 1,000,000,000
WHAT COULD LEAD TO THIS PROBLEM?
It is argued that there is over 300,000 smart phones in Jamaica with Android gaining the fastest market share by replacing the fast sliding BlackBerry. Yet no local focused android app based on the info above exceeds 50,000.
Truth be told the local population are not that tech savvy with exception of watching videos online of various genres, using various messenger apps such as Whatsapp and using social network websites. After all in Haiti most citizens there top up their Digicel phones electronically. While in Jamaica, the masses top up via purchasing a paper based card.
Most locals also do not trust local developers who release any app that collects any form of data. Forget that international big brands get hacked on a mass scale. The Negroe does not trust anything that looks or speaks like it, based on my own observation. Forget that browns and blacks are not the same. Ignorance is bliss.
But there is hope, as I predict new local focused apps developed in the states or locally will be of such compelling use and benefit that the ignorant mass will have no choice but to adapt and adopt the world of android apps.
Note that not all local focused apps require 50,000 downloads / active users based on the object and use of the app. For an app with only 2,500 active users spending on average of $2,500 per month through the app functionality. Generates $6,250,000 per month in revenue.
One can only imagine that when such an app doubles its active user base, that maintains the average spend per month. That such an app would do more in revenue that several SME in Jamaica.
